Often called the “First Town in the First State”, Lewes is proud of its historic and maritime heritage. Since the town was first settled in 1631, residents have taken great pride in the town’s historic character — including the oldest standing esidence in the State of Delaware and the homes of four Delaware Governors. Situated near Cape Henlopen, Lewes is the traditional home for Delaware River and Bay Pilots as well as fishing and ship carpentry. The maritime heritage of our town gives it a unique character with a blend of architectural styles that spans almost four centuries.
